Evolution and Botany of Medicinal Herbs Walk
Walk the farm and forest edge environments at Innisfree Farm, identifying both cultivated and local wild plants and discussing their uses as medicine and food. This herb walk will focus on practical identification skills, describing plants using botanical terms and understanding the evolutionary lineage of plants through the lens of plant taxonomy. We will discuss the interrelationships between plant form and function, phytochemistry and medicinal actions as the result of long term co-evolutionary relationships between plants and other living organisms. We will also discuss strategies to build personal relationship and connection with plants, observing how plants function in the local ecosystem and how this informs us about their actions in our own bodies. This will include some guiding principles to keep in mind when working with plants, including considerations such as the relative abundance and sustainability of the plant, the portion of the plant used, seasonal cycles and harvest times, and methods of collecting to minimize impact and support the health, vitality and reproduction of plants.
