Soothing Herbs for Stimming Across Neurotypes

Self-stimulating behaviour or movements, also referred to as “stimming”, is a coping mechanism that is present across a range of neurotypes.

Whether it be in neurotypical folks or those on the autism spectrum or with ADHD, stimming is a repeated behaviour that reduces anxiety and/or sensory overload. We will go over the reasons for stimming behaviour, examples of when it can be disruptive to daily life versus a reclaimed/accepted aspect of neurodivergence, and clues on what it may be communicating to the mind and body. There are a number of herbs that can soothe the nervous system and address anxiety, intense emotions and sensory overwhelm, thereby supporting stimming behaviour.
