Our Grandmother’s Medicines: Herbs that Hold us During Grief

For those who have traversed the realm of grief as individuals and practitioners utilizing herbal medicine approaches, many come to find that there is something otherworldly about the capacity of plants to hold the heaviness of one’s mourning in ways that other medicines simply cannot. With the commonality of stress and grief that arises from the fast-paced technocratic nature of our world, it is evident that we are all in need of spiritual conduits that heal beyond the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of human experience, our grandmother’s medicines. While these are quite often the faithful folk medicines and remedies used to mother the mothers who mothered us, they are also the plant medicines known to mimic the softness of the weathered hands that soothed our aching hearts, the twinkling eyes that viewed us as whole, and the wisdom of grandmotherly council. Throughout this talk a few grandmother medicines with the capacity to hold us during times of immense grief and mourning will be explored, providing practitioners of all levels with sufficient herbal knowledge to address the spiritual, emotional, and physical elements of stress induced illness. Much like the prayers that were elicited from our grandmother’s lips in times of illness and need, herbs that soothe our overburdened nervous systems and overtaxed adrenals will be at your disposal to employ within your herbal practice to restore balance.
