The Living Materia Medica
This guided herb walk explores plants as living teachers and storytellers.
We will identify key plants look at their medicinal properties, uses, and practical applications in herbal preparation.
Herbal study often begins with a monograph: botanical identity, actions, dosage, and cautions. That structure is essential. Yet plant knowledge deepens when we move beyond memorization into relationship. It grows when we inhabit a landscape, tend a plant, harvest it respectfully, smell it fresh from the soil, taste it, dry it, and prepare it. As we walk through Innisfree Farm gardens and among mature medicinal trees, we will explore how this shift transforms information into lived knowledge.
Discussion will include harvesting considerations, preparation techniques, drying and storage, and the responsibility that comes with working with living medicines. Participants will be introduced to practical frameworks for documenting observations and developing their own place-based materia medica.
