Wisdom of Trees

Forests function as living systems. Trees respond to injury, season, and environmental change through observable physiological processes. The compounds we harvest medicinally develop as part of these adaptive responses. Some are produced directly by the tree, such as resins, bark tannins, and volatile oils. Others emerge through ecological relationships, including chaga growing on birch.

In this workshop, we will explore tree medicine through ecological function and its reflection in the human body. Resin develops at sites of injury and functions as a sealant and antimicrobial barrier. Bark builds structure and shields the tree from environmental stress. Buds contain concentrated new growth. Sap flow marks the seasonal transition from storage to movement. Leaves and needles regulate exchange and respiration.

By understanding how trees and the forest systems respond to stress and season, participants will gain a functional framework for how these medicines act within the body. We will translate these insights directly into practice. Through demonstration and shared tasting, participants will experience tree and forest medicines including resin ointments, teas, oxymels, tinctures, and spring bud preparations used in gemmotherapy.

This workshop bridges ecological awareness with practical skill and offers techniques that can be safely replicated in the home kitchen or herbal apothecary.
