Entheogenic Herbalism: Ethics and Education – Canadian Herb Conference
2026 Vancouver Island Herb Gathering

Entheogenic Herbalism: Ethics and Education

Entheogens are a class of plants and fungi that produce a non-ordinary state of consciousness, often used in religious, ceremonial and therapeutic contexts. The use of entheogens is a controversial and multi-faceted topic. Although herbal practitioners are not typically recommending entheogens, it is common for our clients to be curious about, intending to, or already working with entheogens. As herbalists, it is within our scope of practice to provide education to our clients about the use of entheogens, so that they are properly prepared and can make informed decisions, including awareness of potential benefits, risks and ethical considerations of working with entheogens.

Content covered will include discussion of the traditional and historical roots of entheogens and how they are used in modern therapeutic contexts, including an introduction to pre-screening processes, set, setting and intention, and which health conditions may benefit from the use of entheogens. A materia medica discussion of six common entheogens (Psilocybe mushrooms, Peyote, Wachuma, Iboga, Morning Glory and Ayahuasca) will provide information on their legality, accessibility, sustainability, ethical concerns of working with culturally significant plants, and discussion of the pharmacology, forms and preparations, herb-drug interactions, contraindications and safety considerations. The role of the herbalist in providing education and support to clients in preparation for working with entheogens, and in the integration period after working with entheogens will be a focus. Disclaimer: The information presented in this class is for educational purposes only and is not intended to promote or encourage the use of entheogens.
